Disability Inclusion Resolution

Policy Work
Date:
February 2022 - April 2024
In February 2022, I led an initiative as part of the Coastline Associated Student Government to increase disability awareness, inclusion, and equity for disabled students. Recognizing the need for greater accountability and representation, I worked closely with faculty, students, military representatives, and sister colleges to draft a comprehensive resolution. The resolution called for more disability awareness initiatives, cultural events centered on disability, and prioritizing the data collection of disabled student success rates in their classes. After presenting it to multiple constituency groups, we successfully passed the resolution at the college level.
Building on that success, I rewrote the resolution to present it at a larger platform—the Student Senate for California Community Colleges (SSCCC), which represents 120 colleges statewide. Over the course of a year, I championed the cause and worked with students, faculty, and disability advocates to ensure that the resolution would reflect the needs of disabled students across the state. My focus was on strengthening its impact and ensuring it could create lasting change.
In April 2023, I had the opportunity to present my Disability Inclusion Resolution to over 600 attendees at the SSCCC General Assembly. Through my advocacy, the resolution was adopted at the state level, marking a significant win for disabled students across California’s Community Colleges. This experience not only increased disability awareness but also established a stronger framework for inclusion and equity in higher education.
